The Meteorite is the future of Black Star Pastry. Black Star Pasty's renowned Watermelon cake is the world's most Instagrammed cake. To match its iconic popularity I chose the Queen Victoria Building as its future location due to its high pedestrian traffic, it's heritage and fame. The QVB is a historic building that posed many restrictive challenges however the essence of maintaining a historic exterior allowed a creative play of a futuristic interior cafe.

The Founder of Black Star Pastry is Christopher The. Delving into his background and vision,I discovered that Christopher is deeply invested in the future of food and is intrigued by new techniques and strategies that make food production more sustainable. He also values the craft of artisan bread and praises the uniqueness of hand-made products. This catalyzed the concept of Meteorite Cafe which is:

Minimalist, Futuristic and Beaty in Imperfection

Point of sale

The point of sale revolves around the concept of futuristic. Many of the futuristic materials I researched were cold, metallic and hard. To evoke a warmer feeling I used an inflated aluminium look for a more visually softer tone.

The adjacent windows facing George St is a prime spots advertising the products of Meteorite Cafe. A display wall of cakes is viewable to both the people outside and inside the cafe. Cakes are placed in glass-like balls which can be opened.

Imagine their famous Watermelon Cake as a Meteorite crash landing on the Earth. The penetrated shattered glass, the impact crater, and the outlandish meteorite are the distinctive visual features that tell this story. I use this concept and inspiration for the cafe design.

As QVB is a heritage building the windows and walls should be kept in their original state. To express the penetrated shattered glass, a shattered-looking thin concrete wall and pink glass is added interiorly. The pink colour signifies the watermelon cake's identity. From the outside this outlandish look will attract attention drawing people to look inside Meteorite Cafe.
